SINGAPORE EAST COAST SKATE PARK

Singapore to have International Standard Skatepark at
East Coast

1. MCYS and NParks today unveiled the concept design for the brand new
Skatepark at East Coast Park. Incorporating a beach front setting, this will
be Singapore’s first international standard Skatepark to cater to extreme
sports enthusiasts.
2. The Skatepark development, including the main active spaces and
surrounding amenities and viewing features, is estimated to cost $6mil
Features to Suit Different Users
3. The new Skatepark will feature a Plaza Section1, a Park Section2, and a
Bowl area3, and the three sections will merge seamlessly to form a larger
course that would enable our extreme skateboarders, inline skaters and
BMX bikers to hone their skills and practise their routines for recreation
and competition. The course is about 3,000m2 in area, the size of 2½
Olympic-sized swimming pools, and both beginners and professionals will
be able to enjoy the Skatepark and find features that suit their skill levels.
4. The Skatepark will also be enhanced by surrounding features such as a
café with decking and spectator seating areas for both daily viewing as
well as major competitions.
Consultation with Extreme Sports Enthusiasts
5. The Skatepark has been designed with extensive consultation with local
extreme sports gurus and enthusiasts. Mr Teo Ser Luck, Parliamentary
Secretary of MCYS emphasised the importance of involving the youth in
the design of the Skatepark. He said, “We want to build a facility that youth
would be proud to call their own, and to use over and over again. We are
taking a consultative and inclusive approach in building this international
standard Skatepark.”
6. To create a top class facility that will draw both local enthusiasts and
international professional athletes, CONVIC Design, a professional
skatepark design firm, has been chosen. The Australian firm specialises in
designing concrete skateparks, and their portfolio includes Australia’s
three largest parks and the world’s largest skatepark in Shanghai,
completed in 2005.
Enhancing Recreational Facilities at East Coast Park
7. Mr Ng Lang, CEO of NParks, is excited about this new development at the
East Coast Park: “Our aim is to cater to the widest possible range of
lifestyle and recreational activities in our parks. Whether you are looking
for a quiet corner or high-energy buzz, we hope to have a place for you in
our parks. This latest addition will be a stunning facility with the sea as a
backdrop, and will cater to a growing group of extreme sports enthusiasts.
Located close to other sporting facilities such as cable skiing, windsurfing
and beginners’ inline skating, it will help establish a sports cluster at East
Coast Park and will add vibrancy this high-energy part of the park.”
8. The Skatepark has been designed to maximise interaction with its coastal
setting, and the café and seating areas have been configured to provide
spectators a view of the daredevil stunts set against the backdrop of the
sea. The Skatepark itself successfully meets the needs of local users with
an exciting mix of park, bowl and street elements whilst at the same time
offering a number of major unique bowls and feature plaza spaces that will
attract international interest.

1 The Plaza Section contains a mix of real street obstacles, including various stairs, rails, ledges & hubbas.
There is a real mix of heights to enable progression and cater for various abilities.
2 The Park Section is designed to maximize flow and lines. With a mix of hips, extensions, jump boxes and
pyramids, this section covers all the park requirements for both day to day and competition use.
3 The Bowl area includes a number of linked feature bowls which create a major transition zone that will
attract significant international interest.

He was flow for Toy Machine at the time. He even had a secret nugget part in Suffer the Joy. But, when I asked, he looked at me with trepidation and said something to the effect of, "I don't know. I really like Denver and all my friends are there. I would rather try to make a scene there."

I think we both knew that it would be really hard to get noticed, but it was fair enough—stay where you're happy, near friends. Nowadays, it seems like it might be possible. With Ernie Torres making it his official home and Denver locs David Reyes and Angel Ramirez on the come-up, the scene there is looking like a blast. It's becoming one of those inland meccas, like Raleigh or Arizona.

This park footage from Adio's Lazy Fall Afternoon makes it seem even more interesting to visit.—Josh Brooks

Ok, so Halloween is creeping up on us all real quick. Now, remember I told you about the Halloween Hellraiser Skateboard Showdown on Manhattan's Open Road Rooftop? No, huh? It's ok, I'll tell you again. They'll be 3 G's on the line for best trick, a $100 prize for best costume, tons of giveaways and more. And oh yeah, it will all go down on Saturday, Novemeber 1st. Now if this event flyer wasn't enough to get you psyched to come out and skate, then perhaps this video clip will provide just the right amount of stoke to get you amped. Can you guess who this high altitude ripping, slow-motion backflipping, ninja is? Either way, be afraid, be very afraid. Cause sh*t's about to pop off! Blaww!!-Jay Riggio

Rise With The Falla

Rockstar Bearings

Danny Falla, Midtown Manhattan Backside Flip
It's no secret that New York City is a land, jam-packed with many distractions. Top notch bars, the most beautiful women in the world, 24 hour diners, Sicilian slices and giant dancing men in Panda suits. Just kidding, there's no men in Panda suits, but you catch my drift. It's a spot that many view as a getaway, and for that reason alone, pros come from all over the world to smoke, drink, stay up late and do all sorts of naughty no-no's. For the most part that means not skating. It's difficult to escape these motivational dangers, even if one is from this very city. If you really want to come up in this West Coast dominated skate game, you've got to work extra hard to get coverage and prove that you can straight-up hang with the big dogs. Queens native, Danny Falla has done just that over the recent years, filming creative parts, nailing down coverage and above, making a name for himself. Finally, all of his hard work has paid off gloriously, as his longtime sponsor 5boro Skateboards, has given him a well-deserved pro model.

To celebrate their newest pro, 5boro has released the little "Welcome To The Team" promo, featuring a longer part from Danny. Click and see why Danny is now getting paid. -Jay Riggio

One of the brightest Super-8 gems of yesteryear is Mack Dawg Productions’ 1988 classic, Sick Boys, which featured the S.F. street scene in its infancy. Tommy Guerrero, Mickey Reyes, Bryce Kanights, Mike Archimedes, Natas Kaupas, Julien Stranger, Jim Thiebaud, Ron Allen and plenty of other legends in the making were all featured in this limited-to-1000-copies VHS masterpiece. Now it’ll all be available next month on DVD in wide release, plus all sorts of extras, so keep your eyes peeled. (Scroll down for the full press release…)

Mack Dawg Productions to Re-Release Legendary Skate Film “Sick Boys” on DVD

In 1988 Mack Dawg Productions released a skateboarding film called “Sick Boys”. Shot entirely on Super 8 film “Sick Boys” documents the early street skating movement in San Francisco along with footage of select demos, skate camps and competitions from those formative times. The film primarily focuses on legends Tommy Guerrero, Mickey Reyes, Bryce Kanights, Mike Archimedes, Natas Kaupas, Julien Stranger, Jim Thiebaud, Ron Allen, and Steve Caballero as well as shots of Christian Hosoi, Tony Magnusson, Eric Dressen, Danny Sargent, and many, many others.

Free from outside control or industry support, “Sick Boys” was produced without any sponsors and had a limited distribution of 1,000 VHS copies worldwide. Sick Boys has become a cult classic that truly depicts how fun and care free skating was 20 years ago. From the roots of the whole street movement to classic road trips and excursions “Sick Boys” remains relevant to this day. In order to commemorate this visual history, Mack Dawg Productions is proud to re-release “Sick Boys” for the first time on DVD.

Included extras within the re-release are the “Sick Boys to Men” never-before seen interviews with Tommy Guerrero, Mickey Reyes, Bryce Kanights, Mike Archimedes, Natas Kaupas, Julien Stranger, Jim Thiebaud, and Ron Allen. These 2008 interviews provide great insight into the way skating was back then and how being a skater featured in Sick Boys has changed and intertwined their lives. Also included is a collector’s booklet with classic photographic images from Bryce Kanights, Tobin Yelland and Luke Ogden.

“Sick Boys” DVDs will be shipping in November of 2008. Don’t miss out on this special re-release because it won’t happen again for another 20 years.

Destructo's D2

Destructo Trucks

A Portion Of The Highly Secretive Destructo Document
Earlier this year, Finnish wonder, Arto Saari, raised some industry eyebrows when he left not just one of his longtime sponsors, but three of them. One of those team hops brought him over to the Destructo Truck family. Upon the acquisition of Arto, Destructo quickly announced a brand new truck development featuring the hands-on aid of Mr. Saari himself. The name of the highly anticipated collaboration...Project Code Name: D2. Though at the time, it sounded like the theatrical title of a Wesley Snipes film (that's a GOOD thing...Snipes is off the hook!), it appears that the undertaking was the real deal. All this and more was confirmed last week when my friends over at Destructo sent me a pair of "Preproduction Prototypes" of the newly developed D2's. In addition to having been extensively tested and ultimately approved by Arto Saari, this pair looks to utilizing a bunch of innovative sh*t. Courtesy Destructo Trucks

The Infamous Destructo D2 Trucks Tested And Approved By Arto Saari
The first thing I noticed is that the inverted kingpin contains both a standard bolt, as well as an allen key adjustment. That's something I've yet to see on a truck and is useful no matter how you look at it. The second is that they come without bushing cup washers and contain Bones Bushings, some of the most trusted bushings in the skate game. I've been waiting for a truck company to do that for years. It's about time it happened. And lastly, though I haven't had a chance to skate them yet, these trucks feel super light in my hands, most likely due to the trucks hollowpoint kingpin. The D2's are available in a bunch of sizes in both Low and Mid heights and right now are floating around now in super limited quantities, at select shops. But once they're all sold out, you'll have to wait for their official release on Jan. 01, 2009, when Destructo also drops Arto's new signature truck. Also, around that time, a full D2 team roster will be announced, all of which will have been hand-picked by Arto himself. -Jay Riggio

With Arto backing these they can't be bad because Arto gets buck wild on every occasion, even when The Smiths are playing. And that's not easy to do

Name it nostalgia or pass it off under the guise of some kind of 'history lesson.' Whatever you want to call it, skateboarding's ode to the past is just as important as it's reported present and rapidly approaching future. One site that's paying respects to the past better than most is, Bobshirt.com (it was the name that graced the tag of most World Ind. T-shirts in the early 90's). If you haven't seen it yet, the site that's dedicated to 1990's skateboarding have just posted a full interview with Washington, DC legend, Andy Stone. For all you new-jacks, Stone was an OG member of the infamous, grimy Pulaski Park crew, skating everyday just outside the confines of The White House. Andy was known for his super smooth style and effortless way of rolling away from tricks. Andy rode for 101 in its glory days and Element when it was still young and new and called Underworld Element. Check the interview to learn more about Andy, his friendship with the late Pepe Martinez, his multiple team switches and what he's up to now. Also, for more 90's skateboarding, hit up Police Informer, another site dedicated to some of skateboardings golden years.

The year was 1993 and 101 Skateboards was still the sh*t, despite Koston leaving the team to help form Girl. To prove they still had a set stake in skateboarding, 101 dropped the ultra-classic skate flick, Snuff. Andy Stone had first dibs, Jason Dill took seconds while wearing his pants on his waist, Gabe Rodriguez had a one trick part (a switch heel), Adam McNatt did some weird stuff with his arms and the world was introduced to the skate genius of Gino Iannucci. You're damned right it was a good year. Watch and learn, or sit back and reminisce.-Jay Riggio

Vert don't hurt. Christian Hosoi, Jeff Grosso, Darren Navarrette, Lance Conklin adult cheerleading in the back and Max Schaaf.
This past weekend a mighty vert jam went down in Ramona, California the likes of which hadn't been seen since the vertical heyday of the late '80s. Creature was the title sponsor and their crew was rolling deep at the event with all the fiends including The Vertical Vampire, Darren Navarrette, Sam Hitz, Alex Horn, David Gravette and Al Partanen.

Tadashi

The man who fell to earth: Jake Brown back in the skay where he belongs.

Good to see Max Schaaf in the mix. Dude's good at skateboarding and life. OAKTOWN!
Keeping the Creature boys company were a slew of all-terrain rippers including Tony Trujillo, Ben Raybourne, Duane Peters, Peter Hewitt, Jake Brown, Max Schaaf and more.

If the massive vert ramp weren't enough to feel like the '80s had re-emerged in full force, classic skaters who are still on top of their game showed up to remind everyone that vert don't hurt and age is just a number. Leading the way were Christian Hosoi, Jeff Grosso, Lance Mountain, Lester Kasai and the Master of Disaster, Duane Peters.

Epicly Later'd has uncovered some of the amazing stories behind skateboarding. For every episode where you're feeling your brain cells slowly wither away (and there are only a few episodes like that), there are about five with a story you've never heard before.

I can just imagine some of the killer lines: "Ethan, eat your fake-on…Ethan, do your homework, 'cause we're going to Paris for my art show…I need to take some pictures for a photo book about the decadence of American society. Ethan, make out with this girl at a middle-American skatepark…Don't you love/hate Huntington, too, Ethan?"

He's one of this new generation of kids who's as comfortable in a park as he is out in the wild. To be honest, I had no idea where he came from—it's like he rolled out from under the quarterpipe of some wooden skatepark, the spore-grown result of the sloughed skin, hair and sweat of all the pro and am rippers who shredded the place in the past. Really, though, turns out he's not the product of a skatepark experiment. He's from Chicago, IL.

Nobody has this angle. Chaz Ortiz crooks.

Lil' dude just won the Dew Tour, which doesn't make me want to get his autograph or anything, but is impressive when you remember that most ams are eating their friends' left overs and begging for spare cigarettes, while Chaz is out there kickflip back smithing into piles of money. I'm gonna have to recline here for a second.

PRESS RELEASE

Chaz Ortiz Wins Skateboard Park, Adam Jones wins FMX, Dennis Enarson wins BMX Dirt, Pierre-Luc Gagnon Wins Skateboard Vert, Ryan Nyquist wins BMX park and Jamie Bestwick wins BMX vert at AST Dew Tour PlayStation Pro in Orlando

ORLANDO - Competing in his rookie season, fourteen-year old phenom Chaz Ortiz won the skateboard park event Saturday in the PlayStation Pro. The victory earned him the Dew Cup as the season’s point leader.

“I wasn’t expecting to win,” Ortiz said. “I came in here just wanting to have fun and I mean it all came together. To win it is ten times better.”
Ortiz took the lead after his first run and improved his score on his second. He advanced to the 7-minute jam session where he rarely fell while executing technical tricks on the rails, including a flip frontside boardslide kickflip. The Chicago native finished at 92.75.
Paul Rodriguez of Tarzana, Calif. was second at 91.25 and Milwaukee’s Greg Lutzka was third at 86.75. Three-time defending Dew Cup champion Ryan Sheckler finished 10th.
Earlier in the day, Adam Jones won the freestyle motocross event and was awarded the Dew Cup as the season’s point leader.
“I won a very big, very prestigious event and I also won a championship at the same time so I’m super pumped,” Jones said.
Jones, from Minden, Nev., took the lead in his first run and retained it throughout the event. He executed a stripper flip, a turntable and a KOD flip during the competition.
Australian Robbie Maddison was second at 93.10 and Jeremy Lusk, from San Diego, was third at 92.57.
The 24-year old Jones won two of the three events this season and said he was nervous heading into the final stop.
“I tried to tell myself I didn’t feel any pressure, but I felt a fair bit of pressure,” Jones said. “I didn’t sleep at all last night. I was tossing and turning all night.”
Dennis Enarson won the BMX dirt event and Pierre-Luc Gagnon won the skateboard vert event Saturday.

In BMX dirt, Enarson won the event for his first AST Dew Tour victory of the season and Cameron White earned his first Dew Cup as the season champion.

Enarson’s best two runs in the three-run finals included a backflip tailwhip, a 360 tuck no-hander, and a 360 double tailwhip. The 17-year-old from La Mesa, Calif. finished with a 93.33 point average.
Australian Corey Bohan was second at 93.17 and fellow countryman White was third at 93.09.
“I definitely wanted to get on the podium this year and it makes me a lot more excited to go out with a win,” Enarson said. “I just liked the jumps and it was a good day.”
Enarson’s last AST win in BMX dirt was at the Vans Invitational in Portland in August of 2007. The win in Orlando earned him third-place overall in season standings.
In skateboard vert, Gagnon’s victory earned him the Dew Cup as the season’s point leader.

Gagnon’s winning run included two 720’s for the first time in AST competition, four 540’s and numerous flip tricks and technical grabs. The 28-year-old from Canada finished at 96.00 points.
Andy Macdonald of Boston was second at 87.00 and Danny Mayer of Omaha, Neb. was third at 86.00.
“It feels amazing,” Gagnon said. “After my second run I knew I was in first and I had nothing to lose. I just went for it. I’ve been trying to pull this run all year. Finally I pulled it on my first run, tried it on my second, and had my dream run on the last one. That’s never happened.”
Ryan Nyquist won the BMX park competition Friday to end Daniel Dhers’ winning streak at four.

“I upset Daniel’s streak, but it’s competition, you know,” Nyquist said “I didn’t want to make the judges give it to him, but I kind of feel bad in the end from taking it from him.”
The 29-year-old Nyquist from Los Gatos, Calif. did a backflip over the spine, a 720 barspin over the long box jump and a huge 540 double barspin over the 10-ft. quarterpipe to score 95.00. Dhers of Venezuela was second at 93.33 and Austen Coleman of Los Angeles finished third at 92.67.
“I didn’t know what my score was going to be, but I knew that was pretty much everything I could possibly do,” Nyquist said.
Dhers, the final rider in the heat, was unable to overtake Nyquist after a minor stumble during his run but won his third straight Dew Cup as the season champion.
“Daniel is the force to be reckoned with,” Nyquist said. “It’s a very rare occasion where he can slip up, but I guess the fact that I won makes him human. So maybe that’s the little chink in his armor that everybody needs to see.”
Jamie Bestwick won the BMX vert competition Friday. Bestwick’s win earned him the Dew Cup and he made AST history as the first athlete to win four consecutive Dew Cups.
“What a dream to four-peat,” Bestwick said. “Winning four in a row is a phenomenal feat.”
The 36-year old Bestwick, from England, took the lead in his first run to score 94.00 and the field was unable to best him. Chad Kagy of Gilroy, Calif. was second at 92.67 and Simon Tabron of England was third at 91.50.
Bestwick displayed massive amplitude in his winning run which included a huge 540 and finished with three big flairs in a row.
“Man, what a contest!,” Bestwick said. “The riding this year has just been phenomenal. This fourth Dew Cup at this PlayStation Stop win means a lot to me because it’s a long road to get here.”
Bestwick and Dhers were tied for the title of Athlete of the Year, awarded to the overall point leader.
The four-day competition, which drew 53,566 fans, is the final event of the five-stop AST Dew Tour that features skateboarding, BMX and freestyle motocross.

SKATE NEWS

Pete Eldridge has never had it easy. He's always had the talent but for years, it seems like all his good hookups would always fall through in some way. I've known Pete through skating and friends in common for a long time. I won't claim we're tight bros, but I've always had respect for the dude. Way back when (and I'm talking about the late '90s now), Pete was a young buck coming up out of Pennington, Jersey and rode for a little company called Uptown. Though that company never really blew up in the game, it had some ill riders including Pennsylvania underground legend, Chris Yourgalite.

As a young prepubescent boy, in my wildest dreams I would have never imagined that smut and skateboarding (my two passions, not necessarily in that order) would have joined forces so harmoniously. First, Zoo York Skateboards has teamed up with veteran adult film star, Jenna Jameson to produce this exclusive collaboration deck. They'll be only 500 of these barely legal planks, so you'll need to get on one fast. To me, it's a dream come true, really. Then, just when I thought skateboarding had adopted all the pornography it's innocent heart could handle, I got word of this sh*t. Yep, Vivid Entertainment, the gigantic adult film production company has signed a licensing agreement with Canadian skateboard manufacturer, Control MFG to create a line of limited edition decks featuring a bunch of famed "Vivid Girls." Will shops be stocking these explicit decks in black bags the way Randy Colvin's controversial World Industries "Censorship" model had been back in the day? We'll have to wait and see.

Tanner Skatepark Demo and Contest This Weekend
Now, flipping the script abruptly here, let's talk about this weekend. It's Friday and beginning tomorrow, there's going to be a fantastical skateboard event taking place at the Tanner Skatepark in Long Island. Tomorrow, Oct. 18 will kick things off with a demo from LI skate companies, Hazel and Prize Fighter Cutlery. Be sure to get there early to catch a glimpse of some of NY's most underated young hopefuls. The following day, Sunday, Oct. 19, they'll be a contest open to any youngster who's feeling particularly good that day. They'll be free giveaways from tons of sponsors like Hazel, Prize Fighter, Substance, DC, UXA, Vans, Emerica, Red Bull and more. Both events start at 12 noon. Tanner is located on Wilson Avenue, right off the Montauk Highway in Copiague. If that doesn't mean anything to you, either Mapquest that sh*t or ask you Mom or Pops for a ride. I'm sure they'll be down.

5boro Skateboards

5boro Hits The Blvd & Jamestown Skatepark

If you happen to be in the Newport, Rhode Island area tomorrow, Oct. 18, you're gonna want to swing by The Blvd Skatshop. They'll be an instore signing by the 5boro team at 2PM, followed by an extensive demo at the Jamestown Skatepark at 3PM. And if you haven't picked up Danny Falla's debut 5boro board, you should do that today and get it prepped for him to sign. If you didn't already know, Falla's from Queens and one of NYC's finest. Hell yeah, Falla. Hell f&*%in yeah.

Ben Gore got on Stereo

Ben Gore has been a stylish underground ripper gaining attention from the right people for a while now. The Florida native popped up and made an impression in the montages of Josh Stewart's videos as well as a standout part in 411 14.3 (shortly before that company went to the big vhs player in the sky). After a brief stint on Rasa Libre, Ben's been picked up by the Stereo Sound Agency and he's turning up the volume now. —Josh Brooks

NEW PRODUCTS

éS has always been ahead of the curve when it comes to technicalities. And their new Holiday 2008 Footwear & Apparel collection is no exception. The éS footwear line is anchored by Justin Eldridge’s new Theory 1.5 pro-model—but don’t forget about new colorways from all your favorite kicks. Their Holiday ‘08 Apparel collection is quite silky also. If that belt buckle won’t attract the ladies (or squirrels for that matter), I don’t know what will.

Volcom

Volcom "Arcadia" Jacket"
I know that we're all broke right now and that the economy has gone and taken a big, steamy dump on every American in existence at the moment. However, the weather is making its way towards the cold category, and despite what luxuries you may be sacrificing during these trying times, you still need to stay warm. And if you're gonna drop some cash someplace for some winter gear, why not put it back into the industry that supports your habit...skateboarding. With a compelling ad campaign that's innovative as f*ck and the all-star team of skaters who appear within those print advertisements, it's easy to lose sight of the mere fact that Volcom makes clothing. Yep, they're a clothing brand eveyrone. And hell, in my opinion they're one of the best clothing brands out there, making gear that fits good and looks super good. Two jackets that I'm faithfully backing for my long winter days ahead as a New Yorker are, the Arcadia and the Broseph Von Sickter models.

The Arcadia is a super heavy-duty Army-style, cold punching monster of a coat with a whopping seven pockets. That's plenty of room to hold your chapstick and those Superman Freezy Freakies of yours when the indoors come calling. It also has a warm padding in the body and a removable, elastic drawstring hood. You're psyched.

Volcom

"Broseph Von Sickter" Coat
The Broseph is a buttery, Parka-style jacket that's available in both black and white plaid (shown). It's real warm without weighing you down and features five pockets all around for carrying, stashing and burying those cold nubs. Plus there's a removable faux fur jammy around the hood that lets the ladies know you're a compassionate fella. Who's coming up on that adorable trim? That someone could be you. -Jay Riggio
