Here’s the official winning video entry for Skate & Create II from etnies. See the photos from The Legend Of Boxton Square in our October issue and for more photos and videos from 2009’s Skate & Create contest, click HERE.

Intro by Terry Snyder, etnies Art Director
We aired out a lot of ideas leading up to S&C, but it was Mike Manzoori’s dream sequence storyboard filled with a cardboard city that had us sold. It fit what we wanted to do visually—the photos and video would be equally striking, and it was “do-able.” The props were lightweight, mostly recycled, the unknown obstacles could be styled to match our set, the video had a beginning, middle, and end, and it was guaranteed to be unique. The stage was set.

Enter Sean Malto… the perfect person to carry out the lighthearted storyline. The story actually starts at TransWorld’s warehouse when he receives a package and finds himself getting sucked into Boxton Square, a cardboard dream city full of places to skate. It was a labor of love for all of us, and it shows through in the photos and video. We couldn’t have asked for a better video director and crew, photographer, set designers, support staff, or team of skateboarders. Everyone ripped.

Directed and Edited by Mike Manzoori

XTREME SINGAPORE 2009 DAY 2

XTREME SINGAPORE 2009 DAY 2.

SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL SKATE COMPETITION .SINGAPORE.

XTREME SKATE PARK OFFICIALLY OPENED.

SINGAPORE: The new S$8 million extreme sports facility at the East Coast Park has officially opened for daredevils to hone their skills on wheels.

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong launched the Xtreme SkatePark and the inaugural extreme championship on Saturday.

80 participants from seven countries in the region are taking part in the two-day competition from August 29 to 30.

The skatepark located at the East Coast Park's energy zone is Singapore's first and only international standard competition facility.

And it is the result of an idea put up by young people during a consultation exercise in 2004.

Community Development, Youth and Sports Minister Vivian Balakrishnan said: "This also represents a transformation of our attitudes as Singaporeans. We used to be very risk-averse. If anything goes wrong, we look for someone to blame.

"This is part of a transformation of attitudes that in life you choose the level of risks you are happy with. Pursue your dreams and go all out and do your best. This also shows the coming of age for sports in Singapore."

The government said it would provide the necessary infrastructure to help Singaporeans realise their interests and talent.

Over the next few months, the National Youth Council will be hosting a series of programmes at the Xtreme SkatePark and they include extreme sports clinics for those who want to hone their skills on extreme skating. - CNA/vm

You probably heard this story by now, but one of our fav site, wwtdd.com, has a hilarious take on it:

“Seeing bears scale walls on ladders puts us one step from living in The Golden Compass, where armored bears form an army of indestructible killing machines, but at least their discovery of this Rosetta Stone, the key to unlocking new ways to catch and eat us, was a random accident that couldn’t be avoided.

‘A bear that got stuck in a skateboard park climbed up a ladder to make its escape. The animal had been stuck in the sunken skating bowl overnight and could not get up the steep-sided concrete walls on its own. Officials in the town of Snowmass, Colorado lowered down a long ladder, which the bear walked across before heading back to the woods. The bear was uninjured by its experience.’

Well Jesus don’t teach the bears how to climb ladders! We need those walls, to separate the bears from our succulent arms and legs. What’s the second part of your plan, coat doorknobs in honey

Portland, OR— adidas skateboarding is pleased to welcome Pete Eldridge to the team.

With skills and style and a long history of rocking adidas, Pete Eldridge is the new addition to the adidas Skateboarding team. Pete's been on a mission recently to destroy everything in his path- including his recent Mystery video part, his performance at both Tampa Pro and the Maloof Money Cup, and his part in the adidas European video, Diagonal. There are big things in store for Pete at adidas Skateboarding, including his first signature color way shoe, dropping in 2010. It's a Pete staple, none other than the Superstar, a shoe Pete has been skating in since way back in the day. His first adidas ad is running this month in fine skate publications and a new feature just launched on the adidas skateboarding website, welcoming him to the team.

Stay tuned for more good things to come from adidas Skateboarding and Pete.

If you've been wondering what the All-American man of skateboarding has been up to, check out the crail to see a video of Justin Eldridge's Slice of Life in Redondo Beach. When I watch this, I feel like I'm back in college in a nicer version of the crappy skate house I lived in. Maybe it's a stretch. I mean, a skate ramp's as good as a pool table. We had a dart board (but no darts). Tiger Woods Golf? We had Playstation, but I think we only watched movies on it. We did have a samurai sword that we would randomly stab into the walls and a double decker couch...come to think of it, our house wasn't really the same at all. But, it's always a pleasure to watch one of skateboarding's most clean-cut dudes skating. Watch him succeed—at slamdunking, videogame golf and tearing up the Sole Tech TF.

The stars aligned when Flip Skateboards joined forces with noted music producer and premier league DJ Baron, to create a completely unique soundtrack for their hugely anticipated third video project Extremely Sorry. The soundtrack has been years in the making and features an array of musical styles to match each skater’s part in the film. Baron worked closely with film director Ewan Bowman for countless hours to score original tracks which matched each skater’s style as well as one of the film’s stars Geoff Rowley, who helped Baron connect closely to the skaters and legitimize the process with them and the skateboard industry.
“Extremely Sorry has been 4 years in the making and the most insane journey I have been on. The music was made to serve the skateboarding and the skateboarding is epic.”—Baron

Through an array of relationships, Baron, Geoff Rowley and the Flip team were able to arrange a mix of artists to provide vocals throughout the soundtrack. At the time of this press release details have yet to be released, however expect appearances for major acts in the rock, rap and punk genres.

Partnering with Volcom Entertainment to distribute and market the album, Flip feels this soundtrack will set the standard to come for skate films in the future.

To give a taste of what the soundtrack will be like, Flip has released an instrumental track from the Extremely Sorry David Gonzalez trailer for free available on the Volcom Entertainment site.

The soundtrack will be available for purchase in stores on 10/20/09.

Rattray joins Silas Baxter-Neal, Rick McCrank, Bobby Worrest, Justin Eldridge, Rodrigo Tx, Javier Sarmiento, Nyjah Huston, Danny Garcia, Mike Anderson and Cale Nuske. Busy filming for his board sponsor Zero's new video, "Strange World," Rattray is surely crushing terrain and stacking footage as you read this.

Nick Merlino joins forces with Tum Yeto.

Nick Merlino is an amazing skateboarder; those that have seen him skate in person know how hard he rips. Nick's lack of talent off a skateboard is what worries me and a lot of others out there. In the past year that I have known Nick I have noticed that he is socially retarded and not a day goes by without someone telling me something embarrassing about him. I honestly can't wait to see what's next. Whatever you see from Nick you can bet it's going to be shocking. — Mike Sinclair

You'll definitely want to read more about Mike Blabac, one of skateboarding's elite photographers, who took some of the first shots of Josh Kalis before he blew up, got photography tips form Lance Mountain, lived through SF's mid-nineties scene and witnessed Eric Koston's backside noseblunt on Hubba hideout. So, click here to see my interview picking his brain about those moments. When you're done, take a gander at some of the images from his book "Blabac Photo: The Art of Skateboarding Photography" in the gallery linked off the interview. Enjoy!

SKATEBOARDING SINGAPORE COMPETITION

SINGAPORE: More enthusiasts are expected to take up extreme sports following the opening of a new S$7.6 million, world-class facility called Xtreme SkatePark @ East Coast.

A hundred athletes from Singapore and the region will take part in the inaugural Singapore Xtreme Championship which will be held at the end of August.

Ng Chee Keong, 27, has won many accolades as a BMX rider, and among them are winning gold at the ESPN X Tour on three occasions, and coming in second at the Macau Asian Indoor Games.

Ng is hoping for a top three finish at the upcoming Singapore Xtreme Championship. But the ten-year veteran of extreme sports admits the going will still be tough.

He said: "This skate park is new. It has just started two months ago. Other countries have this type of skate park a long time ago, so when they (the overseas skaters) come to this skate park, it is not for practice, they are ready for competition."

Twenty-nine other Singaporeans will compete in categories like skateboarding and in-line skating, while 10,000 spectators are expected to attend the two-day competition.

Ryan Lee, parks manager, National Parks Board, said: "We are definitely looking at having this event every year, but you always need to start something small before you grow it into something bigger. So this year will… see how far we can push it."

Seventy athletes from the region will ensure that their Singaporean counterparts will be pushed to the limit.

Three renowned international professionals in extreme sports will be the judges.

The Xtreme SkatePark is divided into three parts - the streetcourse, which caters to amateurs, the combo bowl for intermediate or advance users, and the vertical bowl, which is the hardest course among the three.

Some of the best extreme sports athletes will be doing a demonstration at the skate park during the Singapore Xtreme Championship.
