Meet The etnies Skate Team At An Exclusive Rider Signing And Follow etnies Behind The Scenes On Twitter Throughout The Weekend

Lake Forest, CA – The countdown has begun to the second annual premiere skateboard contest of the year: The Maloof Money Cup, a three-day, five event U.S. Skateboarding Championship and festival that will take place from July 10-12, 2009 at the OC Fair and Event Center in Costa Mesa. As a presenting sponsor, etnies will be in the mix of it all, covering the tricks going down, team rider activities and all the behind the scenes happenings.

In between the action, the Maloof Money Cup Festival Village will host an exclusive autograph signing with the etnies Skate team including Ryan Sheckler, Mikey Taylor, Sean Malto and Devine Calloway at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday. etnies will also give fans a chance to create picture perfect posed moments skating the LA City College rail at the etnies Photo Wall, spin the etnies Wheel of Prizes and buy contest t-shirts only available on-site during the weekend.

The contest for the 8.0 Slave deck to the left was a tough call. I had one person posting on here a gazillion times in a row. Meanwhile, there were a few posting here and there with some bangers. 1991champ made the timely, yet nonchalant "Busenitz looked pretty on it..." when Chief lost. He also said what everyone wanted to say when the CPH Pro footage was released ("I want to see some Matt Beach!!!"). Meanwhile, I was a fan of the perhaps over-analyzed Gutfeld post quote from DrunkenPunchUp11 that went, "And concerning the Tony Hawk White House drama—It has already blown over. Fox News is capable of showing skateboarding in a positive light: http://www.foxnews. com/story/0,2933,405 344,00.html. That is the most fair and balanced turtle I have ever seen." GNARnivore had me forget about the whole Tony Hawk, White House dilemma with his main page quote, "Good thing Tony didn't push mongo down that hallway...then the terrorists would have truly won."

But, in the end, lakaianddie had the most interesting—sometimes untimely (i.e. Michael Jackson jokes)— jokes, on point quips and funniest comments. Some of the best that stood out (to see who won, click read more):

It's hard to deny American culture's romantic fascination with Vikings. Our love affair with these red bearded warriors runs deep—making it hard to venture to their lands without drawing reference to its warrior heritage. While walking the streets of Copenhagen, it isn't hard to envision these 8th century barbarians marauding the countryside, getting smashed on mead and brandishing their battle hammers and axes with a grit that would strike fear in the hearts of all they crossed. But the Vikings, you see, aren't just ancient heroes the Danes pride as a part of their past, there's a certain warrior spirit in these people that still lives on today (To continue, click read more).

No Viking celebration would be complete without a pig roast. Simon and William from the CPH skatepark arranged the feast, which fed hundreds of reveling skaters throughout the evening.

Primal Nordic scribes wrote Sagas—epic tales of warriors celebrated for their heroic deeds in the great battles of the dark past. These were tales reserved for men of great worth. Modern Danish legend tells of one of these new Vikings—a skateboarder born in the fires of Thor's hammer—a man who lived his life 100%, 100% of the time. To those who knew him, Kristian Bomholt was a fearless skater, friend to all, and a true statesman of Denmark. Kristian recently passed, but his passing wasn't a fading—it was a silent, yet explosive conclusion to a life of relentless action and smiles.

For Viking warriors, to die in the heat of battle, as Kristian did, was the highest honor one could hope for. For those soldiers who died with their boots on, the Norse god Odin held a promise of Valhalla—a grand hall of infinite ale and celebration. Leaving earth in a blaze, Kristian, undoubtedly resides there today.

During battle, some Vikings, intoxicated on the promise of Valhalla were said to reach a state known as Berserk. Berserkers, as they were called, were warriors who fought in a trance of uncontrollable rage and brutality. These savage killers were an inspiration to those left among the living and the spirits of those Berserkers felled in battle were said to help the living in combat.

This past weekend at the 2009 CPH Pro contest, the city of Copenhagen bore witness to just such an event, as Kristian's Viking spirit possessed the skateboarding of the young Torey Pudwill.

comrades—truly brothers in skateboarding. On the course this weekend, Torey was clearly embodied by his fallen brother's warrior spirit. With fire in his eyes trick after trick was made with flawless precision as he took out his combatants one by one. His stamina was almost inhuman. During his runs, Torey continuously emptied his stomach, only to wipe his mouth and continue his slaughter. Torey, for those brief moments, was a Berserker and his Viking friend Kristian, with ale raised high, was surly smiling down on him from Valhalla.

On Tuesday, June 30th DC hosted an exclusive event at the powerHouse Arena in Brooklyn, NY to celebrate the release of DC skate photographer, Mike Blabac's first book, BLABAC PHOTO — The Art of Skateboarding photography. More than 150 media and industry VIPs, including DC athlete Ryan Smith, came to support Blabac and view the photo gallery exhibit showcasing 20 years of Blabac's photography pulled from his extensive collection of work.

Available July 1st, BLABAC PHOTO is the first skateboarding book of its kind featuring 224 pages of iconic images in skateboarding in a beautifully designed, cloth-bound, large format hardcover book. Published by powerHouse Books, BLABAC PHOTO takes you on a visual journey from Blabac's humble beginnings as a kid who was intrigued by cameras to shooting some of the most legendary skateboarders of all time. Coinciding with the release of BLABAC PHOTO is the Blabac Azure mid, the first DC signature shoe that has been made for a non-professional team member. This shoe was designed to compliment the book and pay homage to Balbac and his work with DC over the past 10 years. I mean "Maloof's Most Wanted" in the most general sense, since this is a list of things I want to see. As far as a contest goes, the Maloof Money Cup is one of the most interesting (read: has the most money to do really innovative stuff). So, here are a few things I'm looking forward to from the Maloof brother's big shabang coming up on July 10-12 (not necessarily in order of importance):

1) The Course:
This short-term dreamspot was designed by Geoff Rowley and Joe Ciaglia with assistance from Colby Carter, Mark Waters and Pro skaters Lance Mountain, Braydon Szafranski and Erik Ellington. It's supposed to have famous spots, like the Sunset up-down ledge, the Barcelona ledge and big four, the Rincon 12-stair rail, Pier 7, the Mission 3-up-3 down and UC Irvine's 6-stair hubba and rails. The bump-to-picnic table design, made by Chris C. of New Jersey, was one of thousand of entries chosen by Transworld Skateboarding's staff to be incorporated into the park. Pretty amazing. Hopefully next year, they'll Scrooge McDuck the whole thing, by digging up the whole slab of concrete, and airlift it to a neighborhood park. To read more about the course, check the article.
2) The Top 36:
There are 36 skaters already confirmed in the contest that were initially selected and they include some of the best people in skateboarding (and not necessarily people you expect at contests). I once had this acquaintance named the Wild Card and while it was frightening to see what he might do during a night out on the town, it made things exciting. Similarly, the Wild Cards, which were voted in by fans will be the most fun to watch. The winners are: Adam Dyet, Bobby Worrest, Brandon Westgate, David Gonzales, Kurtis Colamonico, Lizard King, Mike Vallely, Mikey Taylor, Billy Marks, Rodrigo TX, Spanky, Stevie Williams, Tony Trujillo. The alternates are Pete Eldridge , Sierra Fellers, Nick Trapasso and Danny Cerezini.
4) Leo Romero:
I put him in here on his own, because I've enjoyed a lot of his contest appearances. My first trial run at this job, I covered X Games 14 where Leo showed up with a black eye and a white shirt that was covered in dry blood. At last year's Maloof Money Cup, he devoted a lot of time to going the opposite way. I hope he's as entertaining this year.
5) The Money:
I'm not planning on winning any of this cash, so it's more a matter of surprise. This year's contest has a prize purse of more than $450,000 awarded across men and women's pro street, men's pro vert and the am championships. That's funny money, so I'm hoping they will award it in cash and the wind will pick up so I can scoop up a hundo. Probably won't happen, though.
6) Fun: This one's self-explanatory.

Carlsbad, CA (June 29, 2009) — X Games gold medalist, television star and active philanthropist, Ryan Sheckler has been nominated Best Male Action Sport Athlete at the 2009 ESPY Awards, it was announced this week. The ESPY Awards honor the best achievements, moments and leading athletes of the previous year. Fans can vote for Sheckler at www.expys.tv or www.espn.mobi through July 11. The awards will be presented July 15 at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles, with the taped show airing July 19 on ESPN.


Sheckler has also been nominated for two Teen Choice Awards in the categories of TV Male Reality/Variety Star and Action Sports Male. Fans can vote for him every day at www.teenchoiceawards.com. The awards will be presented on August 9, with a taped show airing August 10 on FOX.


"I'm so honored to be nominated for these awards," said Sheckler. "I have the best fans in the world and I'm reminded of this every time they come out to vote for me or to watch me skate."


These nominations are just the latest in what is a very busy summer for the 19-year-old athlete. Sheckler recently announced his own clothing line, RS by Sheckler, which will be available at retailers nationwide on July 10, and he will compete next month in three major competitions  the Maloof Money Cup, the Dew Tour, and the X Games where last year he took home his second gold.


On Monday, July 27 and the eve of the X Games, Sheckler will host the 2nd Annual Ryan Sheckler X Games Celebrity Skins Classic at the prestigious Coto de Caza Golf and Racquet Club. The tournament will include a putting contest, a helicopter ball drop, shotgun start, and an awards ceremony. The festivities will continue with an evening featuring a dinner and reception with live music, a silent auction, and a live auction hosted by Sal Masekela of E! Entertainment and host of X Games. Proceeds from the tournament will benefit the Sheckler Foundation and the Rob Dyrdek/DC Shoes Skate Plaza Foundation.

Most of us knew it was back on, but didn't expect such interesting first games. Skateboarding's most street-planting-est and most foot-planting-est skater, Mike Vallely, got the unlucky first game against Chris Cole. If you haven't, take a look here . It's the first game outside the rules—oddly refreshing and very awkward. Meanwhile, the Chief has a wild game with Busenitz. We know he's good, though (Ten Tricks ).

Torey Pudwill swept the whole damn thing! Best Trick and the contest. His heat’s jam session included Eric Koston and was one of the best finals the crowd had ever seen. Peep the video to see all the madness. More puking and more amazing tricks. Torey’s best trick winning back Smith kickflip out and frontside flip over the whole electrical box are at the end of the video. Congrats Torey, drinks on you tonight! Stay tuned for more videos, contest photos, and of course party photos later this week. We’ll be flying home from Europe tomorrow.

Congrats Torak! All the skateboarding News pages and Blogs have been blowing up with the News that Torak swept the CPH Pro Competition this weekend. Torey threw down some really impressive stuff that brought him the obvious victory in both Best Trick and The Finals. The thing I am most shocked and amazed about is that he qualified 1st in the preliminaries which is often certain death and you rarely see a repeat the very next day in the finals. That kind of performance is reserved for true champions like Tiger Woods and Eric Koston. Amazing! Thanks to thirsty camera vultures we all know your secret weapon now! Pushing out the weakness by way of Vomit. When you get home Torey we gonna pop that bubbly, this time withoiut shooting it into your eye where it burns! wrap up that 1st Hand and marinate poolside! June 21st, 2009 was many things to many people. For most everyone on the northern hemisphere it marked the first day of summer. For all the patriarchs out there, it was a day of celebration and appreciation for Father's Day. And for all of us, it was Go Skateboarding Day. Events and sessions went down all over the globe. The cynics among us might say we don't need a skate holiday, that every day possible should be a "Go Skate" day. Nevertheless, any proper excuse to drop everything and roll for the day should be appreciated and embraced. I got out and pushed around between rainstorms and I hope you got to celebrate the day in whatever way you saw fit. As for my man Josh Brooks—homie went gusto. Brooks drove to, participated and skated in not one but three major events in the Southern California region on Go Skateboarding Day. So here are the updates on all that you might have missed.

P-Rod Skate Park Grand Opening
With Free Paul Sr. Stand-Up Bonus
On June 21st—Go Skateboarding Day 2009—P-Rod along with Nike, the LA84 Foundation and the LA Parks and Rec opened a new park with recreated spots co-designed by Lance Mountain. There's a Griffith Park imitation, a Sylmar rail revival and granite ledges for days. It opened at the Ritchie Valens Recreation Center with Paul Rodriguez Sr. running wild like he had free reign on open mic night. Here are some of the going-ons, photos of the new park and a list of the best comments Paul Sr. made all day.


The almost presidential security guards were necessary when they opened up the gates and let people try to get to P-Rod. It was insane.1) Introducing Shane O'Neil off-the-cuff, Paul Sr. said O'Neil was from Ireland (maybe because of his last name, but Shane O'Neil's from Australia)
2) While introducing Reese Forbes said something to the effect of (and I'm paraphrasing), Reese Forbes...we're happy to have him on the team. He's an amazing skateboarder, although I haven't really seen him skate.

3) When Janoski walked up to the stage to be introduced, Paul Sr. said, "In his spare time, he likes to impersonate Ringo Starr."
4) I hate to beat a dead horse, but E'erybody be likin' Theotis Beasley (Paul Sr. didn't say that. You could just hear it in the crowd). It's what you can get for staying positive, kids.

Looks like something from SF, but I don't know what this is a recreation of.5) Another funny moment was when they brought PRod on stage and opened up to questions from the crowd. "Can I have a bearing?" one kid asked. Another one, dressed in a Riddler cape held up his shoe. "I need a new shoe," he yelled. P-Rod smiled, shook his head and said, "Wait a minute. These aren't exactly questions." They shut down that Q&A real fast after that.

The Griffith Park ditch, both ways.6) After the grandstanding, they did a short demo. P-Rod killed it and Danny Supa tried to put down some tricks. Meanwhile, Paul Sr. was running around throwing out jokes. At one point, he called Danny Supa Mr. Clean and asked him how long he's been impersonating Lex Luther (all in good fun).

7) Lastly, Paul Sr. quipped, so truthfully, "If any of you happen to have a son that you can borrow money from, I suggest you do it. It's great."

It was a fun event and swarming with people, which only proves the importance of the park. Not only does it look amazing, but in a place like Pacoima, CA, it's not only nice to have, it's a much needed outlet for kids who have a lot of opportunities to get themselves into real trouble (and I'm not talking about typical suburban trouble, I'm talking

about drugs, guns, gangs and all the legal trouble that comes along with them). It was great to see Paul Sr. and Jr. interact, because Sr.'s such a continuous joker that Jr. just lays back and stays quite. You can tell from seeing him with his father and working on projects like this that he's very much his mother's child. Nevertheless, there would be no Paul Jr. without a the comedic Paul Sr., so was a nice Father's Day celebration to see them working together for a good cause.

I'm giving a thumbs down to the fact that the park didn't open, not a thumbs down to the park. I'm eager as hell for this thing to open up.Go Skateboarding Day in Venice started off as a little bit of a let down for me. It's not to say that the event wasn't fun. It's just that I drove nearly an hour to cover it, expecting the shredfest would be coupled with the opening of the new Venice skatepark. It didn't.

Still, it was fun for the kids. Mark Appleyard, Louie Lopez, Terell Robinson, Ryan Decenzo and some other heads were signing autographs, while kids were shredding picnic tables, fire hydrants and kickers to oil drums—everything spraypainted in typical Venice fashion. There was a miniature version of Moose —a mini-Moose—and a whole bunch of people in interesting clothes, wild hair and all the craziness you can expect from Venice.
The last event I made it to on Go Skateboarding Day was Dennis Busenitz's adidas shoe release/skate jam in Upland, California. This was the first time I had been to Upland and, maybe it was dilusion from being trapped in the car, but when I got out of my automobile, I kind of liked it. It had a beautiful landscape and a tranquil lifestyle. This happened to differ greatly with how the demo went. Apparently, it was packed in and non-stop skating. The Adidas van was there and a DJ bumped some tunes while kids shredded with Dennis and other Deluxe dudes.

It comes with great saddness to many that the King of Pop, Michael Jackson, is dead. Regardless of what turmoil surrounded his life (especially the latter part), he will always have the Moon Walk, millions of devoted fans and, for us skate rats, the soundtrack to a few epic skate parts. Here are a few that stand out:

Jereme Rogers, skateboarding's most recent pro to go MIA, has retired to devote his life to music in the way that Jackson did early on. There's no telling how that will go, but Jereme Rogers will always have his part in the legendary Yeah, Right? to MJ's "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough."

Kareem Campbell set P-Rod's part in City Star's Street Cinema to the same Jackson 5 song as Guy Mariano, possibly as a statement that P-Rod was the new young guy—the future. Whether that's the perception or not, it just proves that "ABC" is a banger to skate to (regretfully, sound turned off here as well, so just remember).

Tony Tave skated to "Working Day and Night" in Circa's It's Time (an often overlooked video, by the way).

Last, but not least, Jerry Hsu skated to "Beat It" in Tilt Mode Man Down. This part put a smile on your face, so I think it's appropriate to watch it the day after MJ died. We should be enjoying what he left us...

His tunes were probably used on even more homey videos, but these are a few parts that I could find. Skaters, like the general public, are not immune to a hit and Michael Jackson, for all his flaws and weirdness, almost never disappointed on that level. I'm sure everyone can agree it's a bummer to see him go. RIP Michael Jackson.
