With some Internet fanfare Zero skateboards has finally announced the premiere dates and locations to their much-anticipated video, "Strange World." Though premieres are locked in for the west coast, east coast and Texas, the content of the video is still largely shrouded in mystery. Zero hasn't had a full-length video out since 2005's "New Blood." Though a promo video, a boxset of all previous videos and the Fallen video (which featured several Zero riders) has dropped in he interim, the new Zero video should certainly be one to watch.

Following their show stopping parts in last year's dynamic Fallen video, "Ride the Sky," there's some speculation that popular Zero riders including Chris Cole and the Chief Jamie Thomas won't have full parts in this latest release. The team has 12 official riders after all. But given that both Thomas and Cole are workhorse skateboarders, we wouldn't be surprised if new parts from both made their way into this release.

Joining the team since the last video are new-ish riders, Elissa Steamer, Sheldon Meleshinski, Keegan Sauder, Ben Gilley and Jamie Tancowny. Rumor mills are swirling with the stuff that tancowny has been putting down. And this video could mark the point where longtime amateur (and serious ESPN Skateboarding favorite) Keegan Sauder final gets the pro nod.

The only other questions looming about the new video are whether serious flow-rider contenders Marisa Dal Santo and Australia's Dane Burman get bumped up to full team status and then, of course, who will have the coveted first and last parts. No matter the order, the video is sure to be one to watch.

Plan B Skateboards is proud to announce Danny Way’s 20 Year Pro Skateboarding Anniversary. To celebrate all that Danny has contributed to skateboarding since 1989, Plan B has created a new tribute website showcasing over a dozen of Danny’s best video parts, magazine covers and photos. Video parts include Hocus Pocus, Speed Freaks, Risk It, Questionable, Virtual Reality, Second Hand Smoke, Stars and Bars, XYZ, The Revolution, On Video, The DC Video, The Deluxe Edition DC Video, plus new unseen bonus footage edited together with the best of Danny’s Plan B promo footage. Also, coming in November, look for additional features including a special tribute clip featuring interviews and stories from Hosoi, Lance Mountain, Rodney Mullen, Jim Thiebaud, Jamie Thomas and many more.

In addition to the DW20 website, Plan B has also teamed up with legendary skateboard artist Wes Humpston to create a special 20 Years board graphic. Designed in the spirit of his original Dogtown board graphics, the classic cross and wings logo will be found on an old school anniversary D.Way board as well as street, vert and mega pro boards along with t-shirts and stickers. The DW20 Collection will be arriving in skate shops Spring 2010.

Part 4 of 4 of the DLX catalog launched today. Just a couple highlights; Luis Tolentino has an interview, his newest ad and a video for Thunder. BUCKY LASEK WINS SKATE VERT FINALS AT THE DEW TOUR’S PLAYSTATION PRO IN ORLANDO

Bucky Lasek in Skate Vert Crowned 2009 Dew Cup Champion

Bucky Lasek of Baltimore, Md. won the skate vert finals and secured the Dew Cup in the closest race for the Cup in Dew Tour history. Heading into Orlando, Lasek, Canada’s Pierre-Luc Gagnon and Boston-native Andy Macdonald were separated by a mere six points in the overall Tour standings. It was anyone‘s game heading into the finals, and the last five standing in the final jam session were the who’s who in skate vert – Lasek, Gagnon, Macdonald, and Brazilian shredders Sandro Dias and Bob Burnquist.

Lasek pulled into the lead in his last run with his switch 360 backlip, switch 540 and nollie flip stalefish to earn him a first-place score of 90.88. Macdonald followed with a score of 85.63 and Dias came in a close third with his crowd-pleasing varials, like a body varial 540 to tuck knee, earning him a final score of 84.74.

Lasek three-peats as Dew Cup champion, having won in 2005 and again in 2006.

The Set Up: The top three athletes in the Dew Cup standings automatically advanced to the finals (Bucky Lasek (268 pts.), Pierre-Luc Gagnon (266 pts.), Andy Macdonald (262 pts.) to face off against the seven best riders from Friday's prelims (Sandro Dias, Bob Burnquist, Alex Perelson, Rob Lorifice, Paul-luc Ronchetti, Adam Taylor, Anthony Furlong).

Notable Nugs: Five months of nose-to-nose competition all came down to O-Town for Bucky, PLG and Andy Mac, who each had a veritable shot at taking home the 2009 Vert Dew Cup with a win in the final contest. Of the three riders in the hunt, PLG was the first to skate himself out of contention. The Canadian commander was off his rhythm all afternoon and failed to put up a single clean run in the final jam. Andy Mac made an early push with several fall-free runs in the final 10-minute jam. It looked like his consistency and a slew of solid 720s might be enough for all the loot, but down the stretch, it was Bucky who strung together righteous runs as the clock ticked down. Lasek eventually nosed passed the field by sticking his patented nollie flip stalefish. Sandro Dias took the third spot in Orlando for his third of four possible podiums this season. For his efforts he earned the No. 3 spot on in the final 2009 Dew season standings.

High Honors: The win in Orlando was the third Dew stop top for Bucky, who also stole the show in Salt Lake and Boston. For his efforts, he finished in first place on the season and was crowned the 2009 Dew vert champ. That feat netted the third Dew Cup for his mantle (also 2005, 2006).

The Set Up: The top three skaters in the points standings got a bye to the Finals—Chris Cole (262 pts), Ryan Decenzo (238 pts) and Chaz Ortiz (228 pts) and the following nine skaters from Thursday's prelims were also in the mix (in order of qualifying): Greg Lutzka, Milton Martinez, Danilo DoRosario, Rodolfo Ramos, Timmy Knuth, Chris Mendes, Paul Rodriguez, Jordan Hoffart and Austen Seaholm.

High Honors: Coming into the final stop atop the overall point standings, Chris Cole needed only to place anywhere on the podium—first, second or third in Orlando—to take home the 2009 Dew Cup. "There's more pressure now that you put it that way," he told me the day before competition. "Now I know I have to podium. I have a third place and two seconds this season, it'd be nice to have a first place, that's the way I'd want to win the Cup." Mission accomplished.

The Quoatable Chris Cole: "It's so hot down here today I have to be careful. I don't want to get one of those salty sweat stains on my jeans tomorrow."

Didn't he bring another pair of pants, you ask?

"I did, but I'm so particular, I'll probably wear the same ones. All I brought were these and a pair of khakis, but you know how those get kind of stretched out and baggy and gangster? That's not my style. I'm going with the same pair of jeans."

In the Historics video, Heath Kirchart does his best Matt Hensley impression.
Patrick O'Dell enlisted the help of some of today's most recognizable skateboarders—John Rattray, Alex Olson, Braydon Szafranski, Andrew Allen, Heath Kirchart, Mike Rusczyk, Chris Pastras, Clint Peterson, Clark Hassler and Kevin "Spanky" Long—to recreate tricks from Matt Hensley's different video parts for the recently released Historics video. In it, the band covers "A Lot Less," the song originally by Sub Society, which Hensley skated to in H-Street's "Hokus Pokus" (3:49). It's a refurbished amalgamation of Hensley's old footage, with his famous cut-off cargo shorts, chain wallet and striped socks.

Although I got into skating just after Hensley officially retired, I can think back to the days when my older brother and every single one of his friends had his kit, fully recreated, right down to the pulled up socks. His influence on skating as a whole and the way skateboarders dressed from the late 80s to the early 90s cannot be forgotten and, in light of this recent video, it's a great way for a band to pay homage, allow older skaters to reminisce and let younger skaters get a look back at what came before them. Take a moment to be inspired (a great retrospective is the montage of parts from Plan B's "Questionable Video").


Mingling with celebrities is not something I often do on a Sunday morning, but that's where I found myself this past Sunday, attending Tony Hawk's annual Stand Up for Skateparks fundraising event at grocery magnate Ron Burkle's Green Acres estate in Beverly Hills, Calif.

For someone who is more taken by old movies or the Magik Markers (over a band like Blink 182), the event was odd.

But all the proceeds from this event, with stars I don't know much about, are going to a good cause — the construction of a skatepark in South Central Los Angeles' Watts neighborhood — and that couldn't make me happy enough. Although the stars that I saw or got to interview — Terry Kennedy, Jon Favreau, Tony Hawk, Tom Green, Fred Durst, Jason Ellis, Michael Rappaport, UFC's Chuck Liddell, P-Rod, Jason Biggs, Eric Estrada, and everyone else who attended — were interesting folks, seeing the kids from Watts who will benefit from the park was the best part. It's an underestimated improvement to a neighborhood that otherwise might not get the support it deserves.

Skateparks keeps kids active. They challenge kids to explore, meet people outside their neighborhood, and see what else is out there for them if they keep making the right decisions. Tony Hawk and everyone who came out to support S.U.F.S. and bid on items being auctioned did brighten the outlook for the future.


After three cold days of skating in the Windy City, Minnesota visitor CJ Tamborino was announced as the overall winner of DC Shoes King of Chicago street contest. Skaters from all over the Midwest congregated at some of Chicago's most famous spots in temperatures that rarely went above 40 degrees over the weekend gunning for a shot at the glory, some cash and the chance to be crowned King.
