IASC AND SKATELAB ANNOUNCE THE INAUGURATION OF THE WORLD’S MOST ICONIC SKATEBOARDERS TO THE SKATEBOARDING HALL OF FAME
The Inaugural Celebration and Fundraiser to Honor and Induct Pro Skateboarders from Four Decades
October 24, 2009 is a date that is sure to go down in history. The International Association of Skateboard Companies (IASC) will join hundreds from the skate community to honor and induct skateboarding icons; Bruce Logan, Tony Alva, Tony Hawk and Danny Way; into the Skateboard Hall of Fame at the official inaugural celebration.
“Skateboarding has grown up, and not in a bad way - we can look back and be proud of the history of our sport,” said John Bernards, executive director of IASC. “Taking the opportunity to acknowledge and honor the individuals who have so greatly influenced and shaped the industry allows us to look forward to the future of skateboarding without ever forgetting our roots and everything it took to get where we are today – each and every shenanigan, triumph and challenge.”
The Vans Skatepark at the Block in Orange, CA, will host the historical, invite-only event. In addition to a live musical performance, guests will enjoy cocktails and appetizers and have the opportunity to bid on a large selection of invaluable memorabilia at both a silent and live auction. Proceeds from ticket sales and auction items will benefit the Go Skateboarding Foundation. The non-profit organization provides positive educational experiences, career-minded programming, and scholarships for skateboarders. The foundation also donates to various skateboard-related charities, including: The Tony Hawk Foundation, Ray Underhill, the Johnny Romano Foundation, and the Patrick Kerr Foundation.

CJ TAMBORNINO CROWNED DC KING OF CHICAGO
$10,000 AND UNPRECEDENTED EXPOSURE FOR UNSIGNED AMATEUR STREET SKATEBOARDERS
October 12, 2009 – Vista, CA – After two days of skating at one of the city’s most infamous spots, CJ Tambornino from Minneapolis, MN has been crowned DC King of Chicago. Taking over and restoring the epic street skating grounds of Roberto Clemente High School, DC gave away $10,000 to unpaid, unsigned amateur skaters. See full coverage of the contest including photos and videos at dcshoes.com/king.
Though the freezing cold weather was discouraging, day one included a large crowd and stoked ams from all over the nation who started by skating a ledge spot with a two-stair. Six jam sessions ensued, but things really started to heat up midway through the comp when DC flipped the spot, moving things to a big long five-stair and a handicap ramp up to a ledge. Slayer replaced hip-hop blaring from the DJ booth and day one was suddenly looking warmer.
“I’ve been here 15 years and the most I’ve seen is a kickflip,” Josh Kalis said about the jump down the big five. That changed on Saturday. Jam one alone saw hardflip, switch ollie, frontside flip, kickflip, switch frontside 360, and a bunch of 3-flips. That doesn’t even count a serious nollie flip in a later heat.
Day two started out with six jam-format heats on a gnarly handicap rail and ledge next to it on the ramp. According to Kalis only a few key tricks had ever been done on it or the ledge next to it, but today the obstacles were open to a whole new set of tricks. 50-50, boardslide, 50-50 180 out, front lip to fakie, front board to fakie, and front blunt to fakie on the handrail. A million tricks ensued, namely a stylish frontside feeble on the rail and overall winner Tambornino did a perfect nosegrind nollie flip out.
Day two then moved on to a couple of heavy gaps. The little gap off a wood deck got destroyed, and the big gap over a planter box also got hit hard with 3-flips and a switch flip, to name two. And while a nollie flip down the little gap was impressive, a nollie flip down the big gap was twice as nice.
When the cards fell it was the always-smiling Julian Christianson who took 3rd, Norman Woods from LA taking 2nd, and the tech wizard CJ Tambornino from Cal Surf taking the win and the $5,000 that came with it. He deserved it, especially after his dominant performance on Saturday.
DC also made capital improvements to Roberto Clemente High School, a street spot that’s been skated since the ’80s but has fallen into disrepair. Mending the ground and ledges, DC fixed the spot giving Chicago skaters a newly refurbished street spot to skate for years to come.
Special thanks to all the locals and skate shops that made DC King of Chicago a success. The local Chi-Town skate scene with its positive attitude and the incredibly supportive Chi-community clearly appreciates skateboarding.

Phil Jackson isn't one to sit at the bottom of a staircase, flashes at the ready, waiting hours for Little Timmy to try a nollie flip crooked grind. No, Phil would rather be in on a session, skating, yelling, laughing and shooting photos of his friends. He may tend toward the transition aspects of skateboarding in his photos. But that's mostly because that's what he's out skating, on crazy missions across the country. Not one of the photogs getting chubby behind the lens, Phil will get the shot and then kill the spot, too. (Phil Jackson)

The kind of logo design that's just so outrageous it works.
Normally the release of bearings would go largely unnoticed, but when it's accompanied by a video of Bryan Herman's part stylish, part grimey skating, it's instantly propelled into skateboarding's collective conscience. It also doesn't hurt that Shake Junt is the kind of company that has been able to stratify itself with pre-teen to teen fans that just want to be down and dudes like me, who aren't necessarily rolling around the skatepark barking "G-Code, fool!" or "Get there while you can!" but still can't deny the hilariousness of a bearings logo that incorporates two bearings into a booty, with legs that appear to be chicken wings going into stiletos. I mean, that's hilarious...especially when it's all written out like that. Click it and watch it.
I want to preface this release I received wrapping up Sessions' 11th Annual Tim Brauch Memorial Skateboarding Contest by saying how sad I was when Tim Brauch died. I never really knew him, but I watched him at a demo at our local shop, Flying Fish (now defunct), in Madison, WI—almost thirteen years ago. I remember he was a ball of energy, just ripping the mini ramp. He skated the back of a sofa that we moved up as an extension and I stood there with my foot on it to make it stay put. I think he blunt kickflipped it. When I watched his parts, I always got the feeling he was one of those really down-to-Earth guys—the kind of person who got just as excited about skating years into it as he did the first day he ever stepped on his board (I mean, how awesome is it that he would put jump ramps up to rails?). So, it's as poignant to see people celebrating him as much now as they did when he was alive:
Scotts Valley, CA September 29, 2009- This weekend Sessions kicked off the 11th Annual Tim Brauch Memorial Skateboarding contest at the Scotts Valley skatepark in Scotts Valley, CA. This year was one of the biggest years yet with over 120 skaters from the grom to grandmasters level and they were destroying the courses. On Saturday the groms and ams got down on the street contest competing for a ton of great prizes from our sponsors. The bangers were out that day in the amateur division showing off some sick tech skillz and killing all aspects of the street course. Are 360 flips the new kickflip? I don't know why but it seems that everyone has those dialed these days and so steezy. DJ D'Funkt mixed it up the entire day and kept the kids rollin'. Saturday was finished up by the premier of Supercharged, the documentary created on Tim Brauch's life.

Steve Caballero was there with his always smooth boardslides.
On Sunday, day two of the contest, we switched up the park to the Lake Cunningham Regional Skatepark in San Jose, CA and prepared for the heavy hitters in the Girls, Local, Pro, and Grandmasters divisions. All competed in the sixteen foot skull bowl to take home the 1st place prize purse hosted by the World Cup of Skateboarding. Hosoi and Caballero ended up in the finals battling it out for first place but Hosoi's continuous 6-foot blasts out of the skull bowl couldn't match Cab's flow in this round. Cab stole the show with his unreal flow and buttery slides leaving the judges with no other choice but to put him on top of the podium. Bands such as No Use For A Name, Clay Wheels, Whiskey Sunday, S--tkickers, and Street Core performed live throughout the day as well as DJ RS2, who mixed it up for us in between sets. In addition, local artists came out to display their work for the day. The turn out was great this year and we appreciate everyone that came out to support Tim Brauch!
To finish the weekend up right Wahoo's Fish Tacos through an amazing after party that had a special live performance by RS2 Solid Sound. Thank you to all of our sponsors, especially Etnies, Wahoo's Fish Tacos and Skullcandy, and to everyone who made this event possible!
