Before I knew Sid Melvin, the only thing I figured Bakersfield currently had going for it was the plethora of snow cone stands they’ve got around the city in the summer time. Since meeting Sid, my mind’s changed. It’s quite possible the city coerced Santa Cruz into turning Sid pro because they had nothing else to brag about since their big “country boom” a billion years ago or the rise of KORN. Regardless, Sid’s earned it and now has the most punk rock name in skateboarding… on skateboards. Here’s to turning pro Sid! First off, I hear you have a sensitive stomach… Any good pooping stories?
I have a sensitive stomach? Yeah that’s the word on the street.
I don’t know if I necessarily have a sensitive stomach, but I am pretty prone to getting food poisoning at least once a year. I try to stay away from the sketchy looking spots. What about when you were with the dudes from Girl?
Oh yeah, that was one of those times—bad bagel sandwich in the morning that erupted on the way to a shop signing for the Girl and Chocolate guys, which I just happened to tag along for. I believe [Mike] Carroll got a nice picture of it and Rick [Howard] threw a banana peel at me, so that was pretty tight. Where’d you go? You just hopped out of the van real fast?
We pretty much got off at the only stop that had nothing around and we just pulled into a parking lot. I found a nice bush. Jesus…
Yup. How’d you get the nickname Sid?
I used to be a shop rat. Just go to the skate shop, hang out all day, and wait for people to get off to go skate with. Devine [Calloway] used to work there, so I’d bug them to let him off early. The manager and one of the other dudes that worked at the shop were like, “He looks like someone, he looks like someone…” All of a sudden it was just like, “Sid! He looks like Sid from Toy Story!” I used to rock the Zero t-shirt. I had a shaved head and braces, so that pretty much stuck. I started working for the shop and [whenever] they introduced me, they were like, “Oh, this is Sid,” so I just didn’t fight it. It was easier than trying to correct everyone after the fact. How’d your going pro party come about?
Santa Cruz said, “Yeah, you need to come up. We’re gonna have a shop signing this Friday at 6:30.” I thought, damn that’s pretty late for a signing. So when I was heading over there, the parking lot outside wasn’t super full and there weren’t a lot of kids waiting outside. I was like, damn this is kind of a weak shop signing. When I walked in, [Justing] Strubing and [Emmanual Guzman] said, “Come over here, you’re late.” I got over there and was third in line. Strubing signs a board, Emmanual signs a board, then some kid shows up wearing a Creature mask and said, “Sign this board,” in a deep voice. I’m signing the board and he pulls the top board away, and it was my board. I was just standing there, like what the hell. And then he pulled the mask off and it was Alex Moul. I started looking around and noticed there were people from Bakersfield at the shop. So it was a huge surprise party?
Yeah it was like, Ta Da, you’re pro. They even got your wife out there right?
Yeah, my wife came. A couple of the homies came. It was just super weird. Everyone was looking at me. I’m not really that type of dude to be like, yeah check me out, ya know. I was just awkward and weird. I was super happy, but more in shock than anything. It still hasn’t hit me. I still feel weird about it. You had a little celebratory BBQ with all your friends last weekend right?
Yeah, once again, invited for the random Sunday BBQ and everyone showed up. We had a mini ramp sesh, BBQ’d it up with a bunch of burgers and stuff. It was awesome. Sid’s 5 Trick Fix What went down? I heard rumors of big pressure flip airs.
We were trying to scoop some fatties. My friend Derek—he’s a pressure flip guy. He wants to take on Nate Sherwood because he thinks he has all terrain. If [Nate] hears about this, I think he has my number. I can get a hold of Derek so they can have a battle. [laughs] Who are you getting shoes from nowadays?
I was getting Deklines for a while. I dunno. I hurt my elbow and didn’t really talk to anybody for a while. And then Stacy Lowery called me up randomly. I’ve known Stacy for a while now just from being on Santa Cruz. He was just like, “Can I send you some shoes?” What am I gonna say — don’t send me anything, leave me alone? No. So I was like, “Yeah for sure, send me some shoes.” They were surprisingly really good. So now I’m getting Duffs. You’ll never leave Bakersfield. What’s so great about that shit hole anyways?
I’m definitely not going anywhere. I’m stuck up here with a house, a wife, and two dogs. I’m probably going to be here a while, to say the least. It’s pretty much just too cheap to leave. I’m right in the middle of everywhere. Pretty much 4 hours to SF and 4 hours to SD. The weather’s shit though. You named your dog Brixton. Now that you’re pro, are you gonna have a kid and name it after another sponsor?
[Laughs] That was purely coincidence. I had a part in naming the dog, but some other people did too. But yeah, if I do have a kid, I think I’m gonna go with Doogan Xavier Melvin, or something random like that. Something so he can get beat up in school. What about Santa Cruz Melvin?
Yeah sure. If they wanna pay for the name. Send him a check every month – we might be able to work somethin out. What are the pros and cons of having a sweet mustache?
Pros… You look awesome. That’s probably number one. Good conversation piece. Those are the two main ones. Cons… It sucks eating. Everything gets in it. You’re always chewing on it. It gets pretty gross after skating. You gotta wash your face a little more often. That’s pretty much it. Every time I see you, you’re doing some technological crap on your iPhone or computer, or you’re drinking beer. Are those your two big hobbies outside of skateboarding?
Yeah, the iPhone and computer stuff has kind of become more than a hobby. I help my friends out at their computer shop. I’ve always kinda been into that. I don’t mess with the PCs - only the Mac stuff. And then drinking, that’s pretty much just to pass the time until I can go skateboarding next. How many headshots do you get on average per Counter Strike game?
I don’t know, I’ve never played Counter Strike, but if you’re talking about Call of Duty… It’s just another thing to do when I’m drinking and passing the time. I heard you were pro, isn’t that what this interview’s about?
[Laughs] I’m not that good. I’m actually pretty medium. But you have the headset you talk through right?
Yeah I do that. But that’s more for my roommate’s sake so he doesn’t hear me playing it super late at night. Anything else you want to say regarding turning pro?

With the release of Lizard King’s new shoe—the Bullet—it makes you wonder what the history of the flying projectile that lends its name to the new Supra shoe is anyway. While it seems self-explanatory, bullets predated actual firearms, when they were used with slings. Lead bullets from Athens were found around 4th century BC (roughly 2400 years ago) with “Take That” written in Greek, words that would probably be one bummer of a message to get as some ill-suited “doctor” is fishing the thing out with a stick.
When firearms were developed around 1500 to 1800, bullets advanced considerably from round musket balls to conical shapes. The modern bullet is made up of a lead core covered in copper—the actual “bullet”—on top of a case that is filled with gunpowder. So, technically, just the tip (remember playing that game with your girlfriend?) is the bullet and the whole thing is formally called a cartridge.
Underneath the gunpowder, at the base of the bullet, is the primer, a small amount of shock-sensitive explosive material. When the trigger’s pulled, the hammer of the gun crushes the primer at the base of the bullet, causing it to light. The flame travels inside the case, lights the gunpowder and with nowhere for the explosion to go, it pushes the bullet out of the top, most likely, to merk up some poor soul or destroy a target. As is sometimes the case with this here column, I went to Lizard to find out what he knew about the bullet. Lizard, you’ve got a shoe named the Bullet. Do you actually know anything about bullets?
No, not really. I mean, I know how they work. Have you ever shot a gun?
Yeah, I’ve shot like shotguns, weird handguns…I shot an AK-47 the other day in Utah. That pretty normal out in the desert?
Yeah, just shooting random shit, like bottles and shit. Don’t know anything about guns or bullets, but I know they’re pretty tight to shoot out in the desert. That’s about it.
A gazillion developments have been made throughout the bullet’s lifespan, but Lizard King’s Bullet—with a fan following not unlike Muska’s in the Shorty’s heyday—will definitely be the most popular design amongst skateboarders…if you don’t count Brad Staba and Brian Anderson at the shooting range.

Raising a family and living a humble life in Long Beach, Calif., Tim Tim doesn't seek out the spotlight; he usually let's his skating do the talking. Gravis Footwear is pleased to announce the final chapter in the Thomas Campbell Exhibition, UMMMM with the release of the video, ON THE ROAD TO UMMMM.
The video is a time lapsed sequence of Campbell, shot on location in his Bonny Doon, California studio and in Europe. It gives a behind-the-scenes preview of Thomas working on “stuff” for 3 months or so… in preparation of the Ummm, exhibit which was held in Copenhagen, Denmark at the V1 Gallery, late October 2009. On the Road to Ummmm, gives an insider view of Thomas’s many artistic talents; painting, sewing, woodwork, silk-screening, bronze casting, doodling and um…more painting. But it’s not all work for Campbell, a quick stop-over in the south of France, revives this self-proclaimed stuff maker’s skills before he says “au revoir,” and onto his exhibit in Denmark.
Watch for the first collaboration; The Yar bag launching in Fall/Winter 2010. On the Road to Ummm, was directed, produced, shot and edited by Alex Kopps, a friend and fellow artist of Campbell’s.

It's with sadness that we report the passing of original Dogtown skateboarder Bob "The Bullet" Biniak. Biniak suffered a massive cardiac arrest on Sunday and passed away in the early hours of Thursday at the Baptist Medical Center in Jacksonville, Fla.
Born in 1958, Biniak was an original member of the seminal Zephyr skateboards team in the 1970s. Biniak competed in the 1975 Del Mar Nationals where the Zephyr team turned the skateboarding world on its head with revolutionary riding and undeniable style. In the 2002 documentary, "Dogtown and Z-Boys," Biniak described the team's clash with the skateboard establishment at Del Mar, "Like a hockey team going into a figure skating match."
Biniak was a frequent face in mid-'70s issues of Skateboarder magazine. He was often photographed by Glen E. Friedman. Friedman has a heartfelt remembrance of Biniak with many classic photos posted on his blog.
Following his stint with the Zephyr team, Biniak rode for Sims and later Logan Earth Ski. Later in life Biniak pursued a career as a pro golfer even playing in the Sectional Qualifying round on the US Senior Open as recently as 2008. Biniak is survived by his wife Charlene and daughter Brie. Biniak's influence in skateboarding, especially his powerful pool riding and fearless pipe riding will be remembered with fondness.

Lil’ Baby Greg Myers popped up seven years ago now—although it sounds weird to hear it—in the DC Video, so it must feel good for DC to see him grow into a young man who can still shred the shit out of the stuntwood. See the grown beast kill it in his new Skateboarding Is Forever part, which premiered last night. Doesn’t hurt that he skated to Nihilist. Those dudes rip.
SKATE/explain is a new feature that takes shit in skateboarding and tries to explain whatever comes to mind, whether it’s an obvious skate-related question, something you might Wikipedia but don’t have the time, or a random tangential association that makes you wonder what the f—k it has to do with anything. But, we’ll keep it interesting, so pay attention, you might learn something. Or not…whatever.
First it was Olly Todd and then it was Lucien Clarke who left their big-named USA sponsors to go back to their London roots. Palace Skateboards, a board brand born out of a crew of skate rats that lived together in a few shitty skate houses, has recently grown in it’s ranks. Before it was a company, it was just a bunch of homies, the Palace Waywards, which included, among others, more notable members like Andrew Brophy, Chewy Cannon, Rory Milanes, Danny Brady, Nick Jensen, Benny Fairfax, Joey Pressey, Snowy, Charlie Young and Oliver Todd. As many of the aforementioned are on other companies, Palace is distinct from the Waywards, but borne of the same love of riding skateboards and, as they say, “attracting fit birds.”
But, with Lucien Clarke’s split from Element Europe and this clip on the Internet, I searched back into Palace Waywards’ janky videophone clips, like “Lucien Clarke” and “Lucien Clarke will always be featch” and, after watching the skating, wondered what that unintelligible and disjointed music was. I will admit that I enjoy some forms of this weird techno/rap/I-don’t-know-how-to-describe-it stuff. However, I’ve heard others twist their face up and vomit out, “Whatthef—kisthisshit?” whenever they get in ear-shot of the tunes.
Well, that shit is called grime, a type of music that first emerged out of Bow, East London in the early 2000s. It’s not for everyone, but it’s quite popular in England and abroad. You’d be hard pressed to find an Englishman who doesn’t know what it is, but for everyone else who’s never heard it before, it’s basically a mix of other musical genres like UK garage (not to be confused with Iggy and the Stooges garage rock, UK Garage is an electronic dance music with a percussive rhythm, shuffling hi-hats and beat-skipping kick drums), dance hall and hip hop. Some of the artists better known worldwide are Lady Sovereign (signed to Jay-Z’s Roc-A-Fella Records) and Dizzie Rascal and, for that reason, they’ve gone a little more pop.
Turns out, though, that the mind behind Palace skateboards, Lev Tanju, knows some of these grime artists from his friends over at dontwatchthat.tv, where Lev also has a reoccurring broadcast called the Palace Waywards Global Skateboarding News. New Skating Program for Paraplegics and Quadriplegics Launches in Venice, CA Life Rolls On Introduces “They Will Skate Again” WHAT:
Life Rolls On will launch its first “They Will Skate Again” event at the newly-opened Venice Skate park on Friday, Mar. 5 at 11 a.m. A revolutionary skating program that is the first of its kind, They Will Skate Again empowers paraplegics and quadriplegics with the opportunity to skateboard adaptively. Music provided by Power106 and an exciting professional skating demonstration will prepare participants and spectators for a spectacular day of skating.
Professional skater and industry pioneer of the Dogtown Z-Boys Jim Muir, Venice skating legend Jesse Martinez and Ezekiel team rider Derek Fukuhara will be among the skating instructors. Joining them will be actor and skateboarding enthusiast Scott Caan, along with his friends and local Venice skaters Steve Olson, Alex Olson and Scott Oster. Professional chair skaters Christiaan Bailey and Aaron Fotheringham will also make a special appearance and serve as guest coaches. Fotheringham made history by successfully landing the first wheelchair back-flip. Bailey, who sustained a spinal cord injury as a result of a skating accident, currently serves as an ambassador for Life Rolls On (LRO). WHEN:

Chris Cole has unarguably changed skateboarding over the past decade. The truth is, skateboarding wouldn’t be the same without him.
