SKATEBOARDING NEWS/RODUCTS NEWS UPDATES
Summer 2008 Deck Review.

Plan B Skateboards
Plan B Danny Way Type A DeckBefore setting up this Plan B Danny Way Type A Deck, I hadn't ridden a Plan B board since the companies golden days of existing under the World Industries umbrella. So when I received this board in the mail, I was psyched to relive the old days. Or at least pretend to. I should probably mention that I'm a big fan of the wider board. I usually skate 8.0's and on very special occasions move up to an 8.125. And if I'm feeling real frisky and want to flip my board more than usual, I'll step to a 7.75. This Plan B Way Deck is 8 X 31.5 and features a snubby, rounded nose and tail that I like a lot. The shape is simple and solid and in more ways than one, is reminiscent of the old shapes that characterized the OG Plan B days. And that's a good thing. This board features really thin plys and low kicks, making it perfect for the person who likes to flip their board, yet maintain the stability of a wider deck. After multiple noseslides atop the chrome foil graphics, your fingers will look to have little pieces of shrapnel implanted in them. That's a good thing. We're warriors people...goddamn skateboard warriors. Good board, sick team. I'm backing the Plan B revival.

Toy Machine
Toy Machine Austin Stephens Banjo DeckThis Toy Machine Austin Stephens board clocks in at 8 X 32 and features graphics drawn by Austin's boss and art mastermind, Ed Templeton. This board has a super clean shape with a thinner tail and a more squared off nose, and contains the perfect amount of concave and kick. Not too much. Not too little. Both the nose and tail are just right. And since Toy Machine is part of the Tum Yeto family, their boards last a long-ass time. Made by Watson Laminates, Tum Yeto's boards were rated the highest a few years back according to some website. I'm not a fan of Consumer Reports and tend to sh*t on the first hand ratings of others until I get to try something myself. I truly had a hard time wearing out this board. It just kept going, maintaining it's pop despite a tail and nose that was quickly thinning to a ginsu-like edge. If you're looking to get your money's worth in a time when we're all struggling to make that dollar go just a little bit further, Toy Machine boards have my thumbs ups.

Foundation Skateboards
Foundation Corel Duffel "Duffman" DeckAnother member of the Tum Yeto umbrella is Foundation Skateboards. Again, featuring construction by Watson Laminates, this Foundation Corey Duffel "Duffman" board is also tits. Measuring in at 7.625 X 31.25, this board was slightly thinner than what I like to ride but looking down at it, I couldn't tell the difference between it's width compared to my go-to 8 inchers. Maybe it's because this shape has a wide tail and nose that followed the boards width. Whatever the case may be, it skated like a champ and lasted equally as well as the other Austin Stephens I rode before it. I can't stress it enough. These boards last. Despite skating the hell out of the thing, it maintained it's good pop and it's tight shape til' I decided I needed to put it to rest, aka giving it to the kid downstairs. This is a solid board from a veteran brand that knows how to make a buttery g'damned skateboard.

Listen Skateboards
Listen Refresh Series Danny Montoya DeckI've never skated a Listen board before this one but have been a huge fan of the team since they began. Danny Montoya, Rog G., Brian Brown and Rodrigo Peterson are the main dudes and have been laying it down for this company that lives and breathes skateboarding. Needless to say, when I got my hands on this Listen Danny Montoya deck, I was psyched as hell. It's part of the Listen "Refresh" Series and comes in two sizes. One's in 7.875 X 31.75 and the other comes in an 8 X 32. I rode the preferable 8 inch one and when I did, I rode that sonofabitch like a choo choo. This board has a real nice shape, with a noticeably shorter tail and longer nose. A nice concave and a slightly steeper nose than tail made this thing super fun to ride. A nice solid pop lasted longer than most decks and a thicker 7 ply construction made it immune to snapping in half before the weight of my giant, Baskin Robbins fed man boobs.

Listen Skateboards
Rob Gonzalez Puzzler Series DeckThe other joint I got to sample was this Listen Rob Gonzalez model from the "Puzzler" Series. This one also comes in two sizes, a 7.5 X 31.625 and my go-to, 8 X 32. Riding the 8 X 32 of course, this board was similar in construction and kick but featured a slightly thinner nose and tail than the Toya. Same good snap and sturdy wood made for a pleasurable skating experience all around. After skating their sh*t firsthand, I'm even more psyched on a the Listen camp than I was before. Go pick up one of these quality decks today. And don't forget to peep Viajeros Locos, featuring the entire Listen Family. Sh*t is crazy-tight.

REBATE, Skateboarding Helping Skateboarders.

REBATE IS A COALITION OF SKATEBOARDERS DEDICATED

To providing members of the skateboarding family support, encouragement, and financial assistance in times of crisis. REBATE members are able to activate the skateboard industry and community to help take care of one-another using their unique resources. REABTE, Website is currently in the works but please check our temp site at rebateshs.blogspot.com/As members of REBATE we like to think of us as off duty firefighters that come together when there is a fire, well we have two fires, so we are sending this email to you because Greg Pino and Johnny Romano need your help.Greg Pino, Greg is the brother of California Skate parks Project Manager and Master builder, Brian Pino. Brian also skates for the AZPX team. Greg was diagnosed with Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also commonly known as Lou Gehrig's disease last October. ALS is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. Motor neurons reach from the brain to the spinal cord and from the spinal cord to the muscles throughout the body. The progressive degeneration of the motor neurons in ALS eventually leads to their death. When the motor neurons die, the ability of the brain to initiate and control muscle movement is lost. With voluntary muscle action progressively affected, patients in the later stages of the disease may become totally paralyzed. · Due to the progression of the disease, Greg has been unable to work since last year. 100% of donations received will assist in Greg's medical and living expenses. I met Johnny at The Make A Wish event in Houston Texas 3 years ago. He was skating the course early in the morning Saturday when the Make A Wish kids are usually meeting the pros. I think he was 7 then. He was skating the park like a champ and seemed more interested in skating with the guys then talking to them and getting them to sign stuff. Johnny skated the park like he didn't have a care in the world other than making a good frontside ollie. Truth was though that Johnny was dealing with way more than any of us there. Johnny has Leukemia. He's 10 now and has been in remission the last few years but recently has had a new outbreak and he's been in the Children's Hospital in Houston for the better part of 6 weeks. To say he was touch and go there a few weeks ago would be an understatement - but the kid is fighter through and through and will not ever give up. Even at only 10 years old, Johnny is a true skater. A lifer. He has shown me more courage and motivation then I have ever seen. His parents are amazing (his dad Mike is a skater from way back). If ever there was a young skater who epitomized dedication, desire and the fire in his heart to get out there and roll it's Johnny. As I progress in age and live through a time when skateboarding is at it's "coolest," I can't help but notice a strange breed of so-called skateboarders emerge from obscurity when the temperature drops and riding atop a skateboard becomes less of a source of fun and more of a fashion accesory. What's the story with these part-timers, skating four times out of the year doesn't consitute a skateboarder. Sorry. And why even waste your time? To be able to brag to the chick you're trying to get over on that you "were just out skateboarding?" Come on now. What really gets me isn't that these people are missing the point of skating, it's that they are absolutely clueless as to the etiquette of a session? Maybe I'm old and bitter but come on people...perpetual snaking is still a g'damned no-no where I'm from. It's as if these new jacks took lessons in obstruction from a panel of fruit booters, bikers, those razor scooter dipsh*ts and diabetes-stricken kittens. There needs to be a website or DVD dedicated solely to the purpose of skate session manners. Surviveatthespot.com? Yeah, that's a good one. Anyone who is down to produce it, hit me up. I'll do the voice over.

Toy Machine
Odd DaysAnyway, back to this stuff. Toy Machine Bloodsucking Skateboard Company is back on the move again. This time they'll be embarking on a West Coast tour coined, "Oddity Odyssey." It will all go down from June 19 through June 30 and will be making a bunch of stops in Cali, Oregon and Washington. For more info on where and when, be sure to stop by the official Toy Machine site for details. While you're there be sure to check out the blog of TM overlord, Ed Templeton. In it is a bunch of good stuff from his travels, artwork and adorable wife, Deanna. Ledge technician, P. Rod has a new signature bearing out from the folks over at FKD. The brand posted a quick little teaser of Paul to help pump his bearing. Peep the video here of that nollie, front crooks, nollie flip out. What?!

Satva Leung
Welcome To The ATL If you're in San Fran next Tuesday, be sure to stop by Madrone for the premiere of Satva Leung's newest production entitled, Welcome To The ATL. This video features some of Atlanta's tightest spots and showcases the talents of the cities finest, including Grant Taylor, Kris Markovich, Anthony Williams, David Clark, Justin Brock, Jeremiah Babb, Dan Plunkett and more. Baker and Altamont am, Theotis Beasley has a short but sweet interview over at the Active site. Kevin Romar has a cool little "Day In The Life" type thing over here, where you can also check out footage of Ronson Lambert, Terry Kennedy and more. There's some cool footage of the Expedition-One team putting it down at the Bellevue Plaza, along with special guest, Walker Ryan here.

Girl Skateboards
Olson, Mike Mo & Malto Get BoardsSo you already know this news, but now that the boards are out, you know this sh*t is official. Alex Olson, Mike Mo and Sean Malto all have signature boards from Girl. Gotta love Alex's tribute graphic to his dad's old Santa Cruz model. Now's probably a good time to note that this is the first time in skateboard history that an offspring has followed in the footsteps of their fathers pro skate career. Who's next? Chris Miller's son, Zach Miller? Big almighty Tony Hawk's little one, Riley Hawk? Only time will tell.

Powell Skateboards
The Press Release Always Confirms. Dallas Rockvam Rides For PowellIn other news you already new, it was officially announced today that Dallas Rockvam is on Powell Skateboards. Over the past couple of years there has been noticeable changes with Powell Skateboards and now it seems that the team is thoroughly being rebuilt. Right now, Powell pros are Steve Caballero and Danny Wainwright. And the am line-up is headed by Jordan Hoffart, John White, Josh Hawkins, Derek Elmendorf and newest additions, Aldrin Garcia, Ben Hatchell and now Dallas Rockvam. At the moment the team is skating harder than ever to finish up work on Powell's upcoming video, FUN!

Ambiguous Clothing
Ladies & Gentlemen, Mr. Randy Watson! I mean, Peter Watkins!Black Label ripper Peter Watkins has left his long-time clothing sponsor, Innes to ride for the slowly, but steadily evolving team at Ambiguous Clothing. Watkins joins Ragdoll, Braydon Szafranski, Matt Ball, Jeff Lenoce, Sam Baptista and ams Danny Scher, Paul Flores, Alex Schmidt, Sumio Date, Chris Gregson and Phillip "Pip" Morano.

T-Mobile Sidekick
Tony Hawk's Signature SidekickAnd just when you thought for sure that every type of product in the world had been graced with a pro's signature, T-Mobile Sidekick has just stepped things up a notch. T-Mobile has just announced a partnership with none other than Tony Hawk. Tony will be creating a limited edition T-Mobile Sidekick LX. Listen to what this silly press release has to say... "Tony puts his personal design on the iconic device by giving it a true skateboard look. The bottom cover of the device is outfitted to resemble and feel just like the top of a skateboard, including a texture like grip-tape and eight simulated screws. The limited-edition Sidekick also features a slate-grey shell, accented with blue and white designs, and Tony's well-known hawk graphic. A customized Tony Hawk theme will be included on the device featuring an exclusive video of Tony performing tricks, a Tony-inspired background, and skate-themed swivel screen open and close sounds." Oooooh! A phone with a true skateboard look? Lame. T-Mobile should put their time and energy into things like decent phone service instead of trying to delve into things that they simply do not understand. With that, here's what Tony had to say."I've been a loyal Sidekick user since the first model that launched back in 2002; I use my Sidekick for everything from staying connected to friends to keeping my hectic schedule on track. I'm excited to be collaborating with T-Mobile to create a brand new, custom Sidekick LX that will represent action sports, as well as my own style." Anyway, before you get the impression that I'm hating on Tony Hawk, let me assure you that I'm not. I'm only hating on T-Mobile because they're wack. I like Tony a lot actually. Check this interview I did with him a while back for Huck, a London-based magazine. He had some really great things to say.
Whatever, whatever. Here's a trailer for Mr. Hawk's Am team in Birdhouse's newest flick. Wait, you can count "Figgy" out. He's on Baker now
